Found a Lost Pet?

Here’s What to Do

Thank you for helping a lost animal — your kindness could be the first step toward a happy reunion. If you’ve found a stray pet, here’s how to safely and responsibly take action:

1. Check for ID and Microchip.

If the pet is wearing a collar with tags, try contacting the owner directly using the phone number or information listed. Take the a vet or reach out if you need someone to check for a microchip! Any vet will check for a microchip for free.

2. Secure the Animal Safely

Bring the pet to a safe, secure place — indoors if possible. Use caution; lost pets may be frightened or disoriented.

3. Visit a Vet or Shelter to Scan for a Microchip

Most veterinary offices and shelters can scan the pet for a microchip at no charge. This could quickly lead to a reunion.

4. Report the Found Pet

Notify local shelters, animal control, and rescue groups that you've found a pet. You can file a "found pet" report and see if anyone has reported them missing.

5. Post Online and in the Community

Take clear photos and post on:

  • Local lost & found Facebook groups

  • Straydar on Facebook

  • Arizona Rescue on Facebook

  • Any lost dog/animal group on Facebook

  • Nextdoor

  • PawBoost

  • Craigslist (Lost & Found section)
Include the location where the pet was found, and a brief description. Avoid posting all identifying details so owners can confirm them when claiming.

6. Create Flyers

Make and hang flyers in the area where the pet was found, at local businesses, vet clinics, and community boards.

7. Keep the Pet Safe Temporarily (If You’re Able)

If you’re willing to hold onto the pet while searching for the owner, let local shelters know and continue outreach. If you can’t, they can assist with safe sheltering.

🐾 Thank you for being a voice for the voiceless. Together, we can bring them home.
